"Back When" Tim McGraw

“Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when”

Tim McGraw’s song “Back When” is a good example of how the 21st century is affecting the way things are done. He reflects on a few things that have been changed since he was younger. For example, when McGraw says “And crack's what you were doing when you were cracking jokes,” he is talking about how drugs and alcohol are strongly influencing the world and that the society looks at things differently than they used to. He also says “Sittin' round the table don't happen much anymore” which really is true, at least for my family. I can remember only a few times other than birthdays and holidays where my family has actually sat down and ate a meal together in the past few years. All the advances we are making may be changing some things for the worse, instead of the better.
Some changes in society are not bad. Advances in technology and modernization are making our generation better in many ways, such as we are more efficient and able to be connected in new ways. Also security advances are making our world safer in many ways. Some of the technology could also be why a family doesn’t sit down for a meal or a game as much anymore as well. Instead of continuing trends from the past, many people are moving along with technology and drifting from old habits.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly with the idea you are trying to convey here. Technology is doing things to our society, positively and negatively, that people in the past would have never thought possible. It has given us more ways to be productive and stay connected with others. Also, drugs and alcohol have become commonplace with many teens and young adults in our country. It is this changing technology and illegal and indecent behavior that is changing not only our generation, but the country as a whole.

  2. Technology may be a great connector, however it connects us in an odd way. I remember a time when people would brag about how man friends on myspace they had. It was almost like a competition to them to get the most "friends". They didn't really know the people and that's what I'm really getting at. Just knowing someone over the phone or texting them all the time doesn't really connect you. Not gathering around the table is a good example because you don't feel the need to see them in real life.

  3. I really like this song and I agree with what all of you have said about it. Since we have grown up with technology we don't always realize how much we rely on it and use it on a daily basis. Although when I am home my family usually sits at the kitchen table and eats dinner together, there is usually a tv on that we are watching. Back in those days, all families did were talk to each other during dinner. This kind of goes into how technology has changed that way that people communicate. Instead of talking to someone in person or even on the phone, everyone just texts each other or talks over the computer. It is nice that you can use your computer to video chat with someone far away, but I think that we need to have conversations in person more.

  4. i love this song and totally agree with everything you are saying! Its funny to look back and actually think about the song and how things really have changed throughout the years. The song is catchy and once i hear it i always start singing it. I think things in the song have changed but aren't always bad in the case people may think. Alot of the song is meant to be funny, but so true at the same time!If a song was made just like this 20 years from now i wonder what they would be singing in it. Its weird to think about how so many things change so fast.

  5. This is a great comparison Ashley! This song does really explain so much that has only changed within Tim's time, imagine what it will be like after our time, since we are the technology century! Wow I can only imagine what will be next! Things change and become totally different within such little time.
